FAQs

I already have a website, but I want a new design. Can you help?

Our design studio will be happy to assist with the design of a new site if you just want to develop it yourselves, simply get in touch.

I see website design and build advertised for less than £500 why do you charge more?

There’s a huge amount of talent and skill involved in producing the best websites. Our Designers are UK University educated Graphic Designers. Our Developers have either Computer Science Degrees or similar, and Google Expert Qualifications. We have Designers, Art Directors, a Creative Director and trained marketing staff and expert copywriters, all with years and years of experience. We can’t compete with a one-man-band producing off-the-shelf £500 websites, but we are not trying to either.

I have never commissioned a website before, will you help me through the whole process?

Of course! We don’t want you to feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed. We have a tried and tested processes in place that will help and educate you along the way and make informed decisions that allow us to create a website with minimum fuss.

How do I know how many pages I require?

Start by considering what information you want to convey to your customers and then structure this into categories and subcategories. This will then lead to a natural list of all the pages that may be required within your website.

Can you help me update my existing website that another company built?

Possibly. It may be difficult, but if it is built in WordPress, you can always contact us to discuss your exact situation. It is usually better/more cost-effective to start over than it is to retrofit or fix an existing website.

Are your designs pre-made templates?

Never! We have a team of highly skilled Graphic Designers that design websites bespoke to you and your business. Off the shelf "themes" or pre-made templates are used by others, that isn’t what we do here.

How long has GWCM been designing/building websites?

We've been building websites since 1997.

I’m on a strict budget, how can you help?

A bespoke website produced by experts is a big investment and not all small businesses are comfortable with the outlay. We offer a range of fixed price website packages with a range of payment options to help. Contact us to discuss.

Do we need a face to face meeting before we begin the project?

We’re happy to meet up with clients to discuss projects in person, but sadly it isn’t always possible. Smaller website projects can more often than not can easily be discussed via a phone call or Skype chat at a time that suits you. Larger projects may need many meetings, we can come to you or you can come to us at our offices in Northampton or London.

I like what I read and would like to commission you, what happens next?

A member of our team will arrange a call-back with you to confirm your requirements. A quote will then be produced for you to approve. Once agreed, we can get started.

Do I own the website once it is built?

Yes, of course. You are not tied into any contract and you are free to take all the code and design (once it is paid for in full) and do with it what you want at any stage. As your website is built using WordPress, you can transfer it to almost any other web host. Copyright is not likely to extend to include any Plugins used to create the functionality of your website as we buy these on your behalf.

How long will it take to build?

Each package is different, the more we charge, the more complex it is likely to be and the longer it will take to design and develop. A fairly simple, small site can be turned around in less than a month, but a big site with lots of content, functions and 100’s of pages can take months. The timeline can be longer or shorter depending on how proactive you are with assets and revisions. A full outline timing plan will be provided and we will work hard to meet any reasonable, fixed delivery date you may have.

What exactly will I get for my money?

Everything will be explained in ‘plain English’ to you, no jargon, technobabble or BS. We are happy to answer any questions or queries you may have at anytime.

I often see the term "responsive web design", what does it mean?

Responsive web design is a technique used to build a website that adapts the layout to fit the size of any device, phone, laptop, tablet, desktop. All our websites are fully responsive, meaning it will look great on any device.

How do I know I will like the website you design for me?

Our team of experts will assess your requirements in detail and advise what we require from you to start the designs. To get it absolutely right, you can modify the chosen design. Once you have signed off the design, we will start turning it into a functioning website.

How many times can I edit the initial design options you produce?

We aim to get it right first time, and we mostly do. However, we offer up to 2 sets of changes/tweaks to the design to get it exactly how you want. Revisions only become an issue if we're moving in circles. If this happens, we'll work with you collaboratively on ways we can get the project back on track.

Can I edit my website once it’s complete?

Of course, training and/or a manual will be provided on how to use your website's CMS easily. You should be able to change most aspects of the website yourself. We understand that not all businesses have the time to. You can simply tell me us what needs updating and then leave it to us (for a small extra charge). If you have maintenance support included, we can handle it all for you at no extra cost.

Do I need to have all my copy/images and content prepared before I contact you?

Not at all. We should be able to start on the design initially. Once this is approved, we can start developing the site by using placeholder copy/images while you work towards completing your content. We can even help with the copywriting if you prefer to. See the next FAQ.

Can you help with the copywriting and content?

We have specialist copywriters with a range of expertise from finance to food, and almost everything in between. Our premium packages include assistance with this.

Can you help with images, photographs, illustrations and video?

Each package includes a number of royalty free stock images. If you need anything else such as specific product photography or video case studies etc. we can discuss them in the early stages and factor in likely fees into our prices and timescales.

What is a content management system (CMS)?

A content management system (CMS) is software that allows you to update, change, improve and manage your website through an easy-to-use interface. We use WordPress, the most popular CMS in the world, as our content management system.

Do I need special skills to use the WordPress content management system?

Not really, training and/or a manual will be provided to use your website's CMS easily. You should be able to change most aspects of the website yourself. If you have FREE support included, we can even help with updates for you.

Can I view the progress of the website?

Every website we create has its own development server area where we will place the website being built for you to view at any time and monitor progress. Our clients are added to our own Kairos project management system where all of the project is managed. We will keep communicating constantly with updates on the progress of your project.

Can I change my mind, add more pages or functions after my site is built?

Anytime! We can add features, content or anything you want, get in touch and we will provide a quote for the work before we start anything.

Can I keep my old site running until the new one is live?

We will keep your current website running until your new website is built, tested and put live.

Do you offer regular support and maintenance?

We do, the premium packages include different levels of this as standard. We understand not all businesses have the time to update their website. We can handle updates and keep it all working optimally for you. View our maintenance packages

Do you charge for technical support?

If you're receiving FREE maintenance with us, there is no charge for technical support. We have a range of low-cost plans for those that are not.

How long does it take for someone to respond?

We try our best to respond to all emails within 2 hours. If you have an emergency, we recommend calling us on 01604 638200. If it's outside of our normal business hours, leave a message or mark your email as URGENT and we'll return your call as soon as we are back in the office.

Will my website show up in Google listings?

Once we have completed SEO optimisation (see next FAQ), which is all part of our development package, we will submit the site to Google. This will allow and make it easier for Google to crawl the website. The amount of time Google and other search engines take to crawl your site varies and can take time.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), when executed correctly will help to ensure your website ranks as high as possible when people search Google or another search engine. It is important to understand there are no guarantees you will ever get the number one spot. It is important to research, identify and target the right keyword search terms and understand some are very competitive and can take a long time to get to a good ranking position. Our premium packages set aside a portion of the fee to assist with this.

Why do I need hosting?

All the files and images that make up your website are stored (hosted) on a server, a bit like your own computer, that is connected to the world wide web and quickly visible by everyone 24hrs a day. It also provides you with security and backups for your data/files.

What is a domain name?

It is a unique name for your company e.g. mynewwebsite.co.uk and is what users type in their browser to find you.

How do I get and register a domain name?

We can purchase and manage your domain and DNS for you or you can contact a Domain Provider and do this yourself.

Are there any hidden costs?

We are completely transparent with all likely fees prior to starting the project for you. There are renewable annual costs associated with websites such as your web hosting, domain name renewal etc. We will provide you with an idea of these as part of your quote and what you need to pay before the project begins.

Will the website be developed in the UK, or do you outsource overseas?

All of the work carried out for clients is produced inhouse by our team of experts. We may occasionally use UK based self-employed contractors with specialist skills that may be required for certain projects. Website hosting is also UK based in secure data centres provided by a WordPress recommended supplier.

Do you offer a warranty?

Absolutely! Our monthly maintenance packages include everything from updates to bug fixes. Monthly maintenance will keep your website running in the same condition it was as the day it launched. This is one of the biggest benefits of being on a monthly plan.

When and how do I pay?

We offer a variety of payment options, varying from a one-time payment to automated monthly payments that suit the phases of our delivery and budgeting for you. We understand that this is a big investment and want to help you budget for the expense in whatever way possible. We will invoice for the work and prefer BACS payments or Direct Debit.
